Moving In and stuff

Things have been busy.  We've been surrounded by boxes and other moving unpleasantness.  I'll upload pics now.  Maybe some story, maybe video later.  Once too much builds up it gets hard to get caught up!

Ben left Alex right

Hanging out on their tablets while I unpack.  It is amazing how well they can work a tablet.  They can switch between games and do pretty much whatever.

Our house is new construction.  With that we've found a few weird/random problems that we didn't expect.  One of those problems was the lack of a dryer vent hookup.  We were getting ready to put in a dryer the next day and I called Cody at work and said, "Um, I'm pretty sure we don't have a dryer vent installed." We hadn't even noticed until then.  Cody went to investigate.  The builder was nice enough to put a vent to the outside when they built it, but did not run it any further than this.  It was "sealed" to the outside by someone stuffing a stocking cap inside the hole. Fun.  So our first real project was cutting a hole in the floor and making a hookup upstairs.

Ben left Alex right.  In their cots in the new house.  We were at the new house for 2-3 weeks before our furniture arrived.  It was a VERY long few weeks.

What's that?

It's Alex!

I must say, our temporary bed was pretty awesome.  We have one of those tall queen size air mattresses.  Then we have a 4ish inch mattress pad for our King size regular bed.  Other than the pad being way wider than the bed, it was nice to sleep on! We used it at the rent house and the new house pre-furniture.  So about 4 months.

One of the major downsides of the house is the complete mudhole our yard becomes with any moisture.  When they built the house, they did a lot of digging out and dirt dumping.  Our grass leaves a lot to be desired.  That's our spring project.  In the winter, when it would thaw, there would be mud areas that the boys would sink down all the way to their knees.  They'd get stuck and I'd have to pull them out.  It made a gross pop noise when they were free.  Gross.  And messy.  Mud EVERYWHERE.  We haven't gotten spring rains yet, so it is nice for now.  But I feel dread any time I see moisture in the forecast.

Our previous landlord neighbors kindly taped a welcome sign to our garage door.  They asked us to leave it up a few days then the next day we had a huge windstorm that blew it off.  It was nice while it lasted!

Our furniture finally arrived!  Moving day had a winter storm warning and threat of blizzard.  Omaha got it worse than we did, luckily.  The truck came out of Omaha, but it was ok here.  It even stopped snowing for a couple of hours so all our stuff wasn't wet.  It's not often my luck works out like that!

Unpacking is a certain type of horrible hell.  Not only are you surrounded by boxes and paper and can't find anything you need, but you are faced with just how much stupid crap you have.  The company paid for packers also.  They spent a day wrapping up every thing I own in paper and stuffing it in a box.  You open a box and it looks like this.  It's like Christmas!  What glorious things will I find in the mystery box?  Then you carefully open each package.

Spices!  Old ones. OLD ones.  from Virginia old.  Each package is like 5 sheets of paper.  That's a lot of paper waste for 2 plastic, expired, spice containers.  massive disappointment.  Maybe the next one will be better!?!

Haha!  Nope!  Here is a plastic container with Taco Bell sauces and BBQ containers I've collected from drive thrus.  Great!  I ended up throwing all of those away because they had been temp abused and a few were separating out a bit.

Here is a dog that runs the neighborhood.  I'm not sure if it is a stray or a dog that our neighbors treat like an outdoor cat. She hung out for a while.  Ben left Alex right.

Then she ran away.  Alex was devastated.  I tried to find Animal control, but I don't think our area has it.  Now I see her all the time around a neighbor's house.  I don't know what is up with that.

I can't keep the boys out of the fridge now.  They are better than they used to be, but still.  I have to chase them out of there a lot.  One day I went in to get them a hot dog for lunch and this is what I found.  Someone REALLY wanted a hot dog!  The other side of the package looked like this also.  I kind of imagine it was a Lady and the Tramp situation where they each chewed on one side at the same time.  The other side was more gnawed than bit.  I threw the package away.  But it was hilarious.

Our house did not come with appliances.  We bought a fridge before we moved and put it on the moving truck not thinking ahead.  We were in the new house for a few weeks before the fridge showed up.  Not having a fridge was horrible.  I'll try to write more on it later, but it was horrible.  I kept my food outside in the snow.  Nice to meet you neighbors, see my cheese and milk in the front yard?  Hi.

I broke down and bought a mini fridge.  Purple for KSU.  Thought Cody could use it in the garage or basement eventually.  It turned out to be this lame powder purple color.  Still.  Way better than no fridge.

We got the boys balance bikes a while ago.  They are starting to use them now.   It is pretty cute.  Our driveway has just enough slope that I worry.  Luckily our street is very not busy, so it could be worse.  Ben on the bike.

People in town randomly park in the middle of the street.  Cody said this is not crazy and it is done elsewhere.  I don't believe him.  Here is a trailer parked in the middle of the road. It is not just on back roads.  Crazy.  You can see it in a video further down in this post about the iowa caucus traffic.

Ben.  He drew a line under his eye.  I thought he looked like the guy from A Clockwork Orange.

We left our super awesome gravel pit at the old house.  We have not figured out what we will do here at the new house.  The boys have made their makeshift digging area along the side of the dirt where it is just fill dirt from building.  We are talking about turning this in to a gravel pit in the future.

They have started playing in footy pajamas.  They call them their zippies.  Since they quit sleeping in them, I didn't buy their current size, so they were running around in these zippies that were way too small, hulking out.  I broke down and took them to the store to get new ones.  They latched on to this Paw Patrol zippy.  They only had one.  And it is pink.  They occasionally fight over it, but I think they look awesome in pink.

This is what town looked like on the day of the Iowa caucus.  I've never seen so many cars here.  Ever.  You will see they are parked in the middle of the road.  Some parked facing north and some facing south.  Not on a random back road.  It is the one over from main street.  Different than where I'm from originally!

A couple of days ago they got in to a physical altercation over an imaginary stick.  One of them imagined it and the other stole it.  Then they physically fought over it.  I "broke" it in half and gave each half the imaginary stick.  Then they both went in to full meltdown mode because their stick was broken.  FUN!
